26 Feb Syn Cole: Just Scratching the Surface
If you were to ask where the next superstar DJ would emanate from, one would name cities such as London, New York, Miami, Amsterdam, Berlin, or L.A., but there is one emerging talent descending upon the scene that is poised to put his small town on the map in ways like never before. Syn Cole is that DJ, and Pärnu is the small town that now has a small claim to fame.
Estonia is the most unlikeliest of places for emerging talent to come from, but Syn Cole (nee Rene Pais) hails from this country that many know very little about. As a young student in music school, he laid the groundwork early on for his eventual career as a producer and DJ, first studying the piano in addition to other instruments which enhanced his ability to layer and texture the music he has already become known for. With a strong foundation in classical music established, Pais found himself venturing into the world of electronic dance music, toiling around with the software necessary to produce the sounds that later produced his singular fusion of tech, trance, and house music. Inspired by noted producers like Mauro Picotto, Ferry Corsten, and Roger Sanchez, Cole began to polish his production work through Cubase software and from there was well on his way.
Syn Cole Emerges
With a brand new DJ moniker, fresh beats, and on a mission to test the waters of electronica, Syn Cole left his native Estonia and began to notch some experience under his belt spinning throughout Europe, Canada, and Russia. His spirited sets and charismatic onstage persona caught the attention of several noted producers and artists in the field, and soon thereafter he was approached by Ash Pournouri and signed to Avicii’s label, LE7ELS, one of the most acclaimed in the EMD universe. His official debut under Avicii’s wing was at Creamfields, one of the United Kingdom’s biggest festivals and an introduction to a DJ that was soon set to quickly make his mark in the big leagues of electronic dance music.
With anticipation already at a fever pitch for the Estonian to deliver huge returns after signing, he earned his stripes for the label through his first official remix, Silhouettes. Cole’s next track was his first official solo effort and April has thus far become his signature track. Pulsating with a driving bassline, laced with syncopated drumbeats merged with strings and synths, it has coerced millions on to dancefloors worldwide. With interest still at a fever pitch, Syn Cole next took on a remix of Avicii’s Hey Brother for his next effort, resulting in yet worldwide another hit for the newcomer. Quickly thereafter, he followed up with Miami 82, causing everyone of note in the industry to pay attention to the prodigy as many clamored to collaborate with him.
Standing Among Newcomers to EDM
There were more than a few notable standouts the last year and a half that made an impact on electronic dance music and Syn Cole was at the top of the list for many industry insiders that rated these latest newcomers in the genre. Beatport welcomed Let’s Be Friends, DJ Snake, Cole Plante, Candyland, and Parisian duo Paris & Simo to their lists over the past year, but none stood out more than perennial favorite Syn Cole. As the unofficial protege of Avicii, he not only has the backing of the label as the heir to the future throne of EDM, but a built-in following that has already deemed him worthy of their aural sensibilities. To date, he has yet to disappoint, and his musical background has been a clear benefit to his overall sonic output. When the acclaimed DJ Pete Tong takes the times to hail you as someone to watch out for, the music world is inclined to listen. And moreso than any other up and coming DJ blasting airwaves lately, Syn Cole has definitely found his signature sound and taken listeners on a wild ride that has exceeded expectations with every BPM. Essentially, his tracks have become essential mixes at nearly every major venue around the world.
What Syn Cole represents is the future of electronic dance music and his Midas touch is a clear sign that the future looms bright for this young man from the small Estonian village. Expect more musical revelations from him in 2015 as LE7ELS sets forth to make him a household name through appearances at a number of major EDM festivals everywhere. Syn Cole’s still burgeoning career is proof that great music can come from any of the four corners of the earth.
